Chairman of the Hà Nội People’s Committee, Nguyễn Thế Thảo, makes a speech at the ceremony marking Hà Nội’s 10-year conferment as the “City for Peace,” October 27, 2009

Addressing the ceremony, Mr. Nguyễn Thế Thảo, Chairman of the Hà Nội People’s Committee, said that the UNESCO conferment reflects the international community’s high appraisal to the capital city of Việt Nam.

He also welcomed UNESCO’s recent decision to participate in the capital’s 1,000th founding anniversary in 2010.

Fredesman Turro Gonzalez, Cuban Ambassador to Việt Nam, said at the ceremony that Hà Nội has become an important city in Southeast Asia and has been hosting significant events during Việt Nam’s integration into the region and the world, making active contributions to nations’ common struggle for peace in the world.

In 1999, Hà Nội was conferred the title “City for Peace” because it met UNESCO criteria, including equality in the community, urban construction, living environment protection, cultural and educational promotion, and civic education and care for young generations.
