VGP - A ceremony marking the 45th anniversary of the Viet Nam - Malaysia diplomatic relationship was held in Ho Chi Minh City on August 7.

August 08, 2018 5:37 PM GMT+7

Speaking at the event, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Le Thanh Liem said Ho Chi Minh City wants to further boost cooperation in multiple spheres with Malaysia, especially in the prioritized fields of trade, investment, technology, education, culture and tourism

He noted that Viet Nam and Malaysia share many cultural similarities and their people began to exchange and learn from each other a long time ago.

The relationship has been further reinforced since the two countries set up diplomatic ties on March 30, 1973 and, especially, after they lifted the relations to the strategic partnership in 2015, Liem said.

Mr. Liem went on to say that that Malaysia has 562 projects worth more than US$12 billion in Viet Nam, ranking the 7th among countries and territories worldwide that have investments in the country.

The bilateral trade between Malaysia and Viet Nam reached US$6.67 billion in the first half of 2018, up 19.2 percent compared with the same period last year. The two countries expected to achieve US$15 billion by 2020.

In turn, Sofian Akmal Bin Abd. KarimConsul General of Malaysia in HCMC stressed  that the relationship of the two sides has gained outstanding achievements, especially since the establishment of the strategic partnership in 2015.

Over the four decades, bilateral trade and investment ties have grown considerably, driven by the favorable economic environment. Meanwhile, encouraging outcomes have also been seen in people-to-people diplomacy when about 248,000 Vietnamese visited Malaysia and 480,000 Malaysians came to Viet Nam in 2017. Educational cooperation programs and youth exchanges have also taken place regularly, helping to foster mutual understanding, solidarity and friendship, he added.

Cooperation activities in education and youth exchange program between the two sides have been carried out regularly.
