Guest workers send home US$3-4 bln each year

VGP – The amount of money Vietnamese guest workers send back to their families was estimated at US$3-4 billion each year, according to the Department of Overseas Labor of Viet Nam's Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.

The number of guest workers increased from 126,000 in 2016 to 152,000 in 2019. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Viet Nam only sent 78,000 workers abroad in 2020, said Nguyen Gia Liem, Deputy Director-General of the Department.

Japan and Chinese Taipei were the biggest labor importers of Viet Nam, with 230,000 laborers for each market, followed by the Republic of Korea with 50,000.

Overseas Vietnamese laborers mainly work for construction and manufacturing and production sectors such as mechanics, garments, footwear and electronic assembly.

Viet Nam targets to send 90,000 laborers to work overseas in 2021 and 120,000-150,000 ones in the subsequent years.
