The Government chief said the environmental breakdown caused by the FHS two years ago has been basically addressed but the company needs to fully avoid similar incident in the future.

The company had installed a sewage pipe under the sea to discharge wastewater directly into the sea near Vung Ang Economic Zone in Ha Tinh province, causing a huge dead fish toll in Ha Tinh and several neighboring provinces like Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue.

He also tasked local authorities of Ha Tinh to continue strict supervision of the environment and coordinate with investors to settle emerging issues.

Formosa has poured more than US $11 billion to build the Son Duong port and integrated steel mill, making it the biggest foreign direct investment project in Viet Nam and creating jobs for around 12,000 local people.
