PM Phuc made the point on January 22 in Ha Noi at a conference on the 2018 working plan of the statistics sector.

Seeking speaking figures

The Government chief praised the silent outcomes and effort of the statistics sector as Viet Nam had quarterly growth scenarios for the first time in the history. In Q1, 2017, GDP growth pace was only 5.15%, forcing the Government to adjust development norms. However, the PM tasked the GSO General Director and the Minister of Planning and Investment to make development scenarios for Q2, Q3 and Q4 with clear assessment of key products for proper directions to be issued.

The PM affirmed that the Government always respects the honest and subjective statistical data. He also asked the statistics sector to follow the legal regulations, especially those on their field.

The Government chief hailed the GSO for renovating the methods and approaches to calculate local GDP data honestly.

However, PM Phuc also directly pointed out shortcomings and limitations of statistics work.

Demanding clear growth scenarios

The Government needs clear growth scenarios for proper management, he said. Therefore, the statistics sector should improve their performance and provide better assessments in favor of policy making and forecasts.

The statistics sector should make reports on the world's situation to serve the making of accurate macro-economic policies and improve local statistical data./.
