US President George W. Bush said that he was happy to visit Vietnam, a country internationally recognized as fast-growing and dynamic. President Bush congratulated Vietnam on its new World Trade Organization (WTO) membership. He said that during his Vietnam visit this time, he was impressed by the country and its people, especially the optimism and strong determination the Vietnamese leaders and people show in the course of their national development. He added that Vietnam is an important partner of the US and that he wished bilateral relations to expand and develop. President Bush expected the two sides to continue dialogue over issues of mutual concern. He said he would keep pushing the US Congress to pass the Permanent Normal Trade Relations status and increase humanitarian aid for Vietnam.

General Secretary Nông Đức Mạnh, President Nguyễn Minh Triết and Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng welcomed President George W. Bush to Vietnam for a formal visit and attendance at the 14th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Hanoi, seeing this a landmark event, heralding in a new development in bilateral relations. They appreciated the constructive contributions made by the US side to attempt to make the meeting a success. They stated that the two sides should make efforts to strengthen and promote the friendly and cooperative ties on the basis of independence, self-reliance, non-interference, equality, mutual benefit, broad and permanent cooperation in many areas and mutual respect in the interests of the two countries’ peoples and for the sake of peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.
