Garment sector eyes home-ground with three master projects

VGP – The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MIT) is asking the garment and textile sector to outline three master projects to expand the sector’s domestic market shares and develop supporting industries, said MIT Deputy Minister Bùi Xuân Khu in a recent newspaper interview.

July 17, 2009 5:00 PM GMT+7

The projects include: (i) producing 1 billion meters of cloth from now to 2015 as input materials for exports; (ii) setting up cotton specialized farms; and (iii) developing human resource for the sector, said Mr. Khu.

He named designing, distribution and sale as three keys for garment and textile enterprises to conquer the home-ground.

Việt Nam has planned to meet at least 65% of the domestic demand for materials used to make garments and textiles by 2015.

Currently, Việt Nam has to import a large quantity of garment raw materials. Just few local enterprises can control their input materials.

Regarding the reasons why the local supporting industries are not strong enough now, Mr. Khu blamed it for poor cooperation among garment and textile enterprises and between producers and the Việt Nam Garment and Textile Association (VITAS).

In the first half of this year, garment and textile export turnover reached nearly US $4.1 billion, down by 1.3% against the same period last year. However, the growth rate in domestic market posted at 48%.

Việt Nam expects to earn an export turnover of US $9.5 billion this year against US $9.1 billion in 2008.
