Politburo member Minh made the remark at a conference held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Ha Noi on December 23 to review its 2019 performance, during which he praised the efforts exerted by the ministry’s officials, civil servants and employees.

The Deputy PM said Viet Nam’s relations with countries continue to maintain growth momentum this year, stating that international integration and economic diplomacy in service of development have registered new breakthroughs in terms of both quantity and quality, with the official implementation of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the signing of the EU-Viet Nam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the EU-Viet Nam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA).

Viet Nam’s multilateral diplomacy has achieved important results, initially demonstrating the spirit of the Directive 25 of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee on accelerating and elevating multilateral diplomacy. The country’s successfully organization of the second summit between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the United States, and its election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2020-2021 with a near unanimous vote (192/193) shows the trust of international friends in Viet Nam’s ability to contribute to resolving international and regional issues, he said.

Regarding the border and territorial affairs, with 100% approval, the National Assembly officially ratified the Supplementary Treaty to the 1985 Treaty on the Delimitation of National Boundaries and the 2005 Supplementary Treaty between Viet Nam and Cambodia, together with a protocol on land border demarcation and marker planting between the two countries, Deputy PM Minh stated.

He emphasized the significance of 2020 as Viet Nam is preparing to organize the Party congresses at all levels, towards the 13th National Party Conference.

Viet Nam will also celebrate the 75th anniversary of its diplomatic sector next year, in addition to assuming the role of ASEAN Chair and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure, he noted.
