First VN-France defense-security dialogue held

VGP - The first Viet Nam-France dialogue on security and defense strategy was held in Paris, France on September 18.

September 19, 2018 10:09 AM GMT+7

The event was jointly chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son; Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Viet Nam People’s Army Pham Ngoc Minh; and French Minister of State for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean Baptiste Lemoyne and Secretary of State to the Minister of the Armed Forces Geneviève Darrieussecq.

The event took place in the context of celebrations for the 45th anniversary of the Viet Nam-France bilateral diplomatic ties.

At the event, Mr. Jean Baptiste Lemoyne expressed his delight on the positive growth in the partnership between the two countries since they set up their strategic partnership in 2013.

He stressed the need to increase the exchange of delegations at all levels and effectively implement cooperation mechanisms, such as a dialogue on security and defense strategy, a dialogue on defense policies, and an annual high-level dialogue on economy.

Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and French Minister of State for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean Baptiste Lemoyne asserted that economic cooperation is the pillar in Viet Nam-France Strategic Partnership, highlighting the two-way trade value of US$4.6 billion in 2017.

Both sides highly valued the delegation exchange between the defense ministries and militaries of both countries, and the visit to France by Vietnamese Defense Minister Ngo Xuan Lich, agreeing to foster affiliation in personnel training, military medicine, hydrograph, the defense industry, and UN peacekeeping operations.

At the dialogue, the two sides also discussed regional and international issues of shared concerns, consenting to coordinate closely with each other at multilateral forums, while supporting initiatives and efforts to promote peace and stability in the region and the world.

Viet Nam is ready to work with France in strengthening maritime security in the upcoming time, said the Vietnamese leader.
