Exports to U.S. up 13.2% in nine months

VGP – Viet Nam gained more than US$35 billion from exporting goods to the U.S over the recent nine months of 2018, an increase of US$4.08 billion against the same period last year, a year-on-year increase of 13.2% and accounting for 19.5% of the nation’s total export turnover.

In the first nine months of 2018, seven Viet Nam’s export items witnessed the trade value exceeding US$1 billion

Since Viet Nam-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement came into effect in 2000, the two-way trade value continuously rose. The trade value increased from US$730 million in 2010 to US$41.6 billion in 2017. 

In the first nine months of 2018, seven Viet Nam’s export items witnessed the trade value exceeding US$1 billion.

The exports of garment took the lead with US$10.33 billion, up 11.6% and accounting for 46% of Viet Nam’s export value to the U.S. 

It was followed by footwear with US$4.27 billion (up 13.5% and making up 12.2%), phones and spare parts US$4.12 billion (up 43.6% and accounting for 11.8%), wood and wooden products with US$2.73 billion (up 15.7% and making up 7.8%), computers, electronics and accessories with US$2.07 billion (down 14.1% and accounting for 5.9%). 

Other products included machines, equipment and tools with US$2.34 billion (up 29.6%) and aquatic products with US$1.14 billion (up 9.2%). 

According to the statistics of the General Department of Customs, Viet Nam’s imports from the U.S. were estimated at US$9.55 billion, a year-on-year increase of 36.9% and making up 5.5% of the nation’s total import value.
