Exports of coffee, shrimp rocket

VGP - Viet Nam looks to export over 1.5 million tons of coffee for nearly US$3 billion in the 2013-2014 crop, a year-on-year increase of 20%.

April 14, 2014 7:10 PM GMT+7
The country has raked in US$1 billion from exporting around 700 tons of coffee since last October.
The price was between US$2,000 and 2,200 per ton, which is forecast to rise higher in the next crop due to a lower output as a result of a drought in some coffee-growing areas in the world.

Viet Nam is striving to increase the output as the global demand for this product remains very high.
Coffee is one of Viet Nam’s major hard currency earners, with the Central Highlands as the largest growing area.

Last year, the country exported 1.32 million tons of coffee, earning US$2.75 billion.

In 2013, the vountry earned US$1.58 billion from exporting white-legged shrimp, up 11.3% against in 2012 and accounting for 50.7% of total shrimp exports.

The exports to the US market increased 337.6% in the year.

The US is Viet Nam’s largest shrimp importer, accounting for 22.2% in 2013.

In January 2014, Viet Nam gained US$86.88 million from selling this product to the US, a year-on-year increase of 163%.

In the month, the shrimp exports to other nations sharply increased such as Japan and the EU up 64.3%, the Republic of Korea up 143.5% and Australia up 96%.
