The Government chief also asked the Việt Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry to design a plan on establishing the Việt Nam-India Business Council.

Việt Nam and India established the diplomatic relationship in 1954 and upgraded to the Ambassadorship level on January 7, 1972.

The total two-way trade turnover sharply increased from US $72 million in 1995 to US $2,478 million in 2008. The figure is expected to reach US $3 billion this year and US $5 billion in 2015.

In October 2009, India recognized Việt Nam as a full market economy and the two sides signed a trade agreement in goods.

Việt Nam is one of promising destinations for Indian investors, including ONGC, Essar, Tata Steel, Larsen & Turbo, Ranbaxy, and Godrej.
