The leaders of the 21 APEC member economies

Great success of APEC Economic Leaders' Week

For the second time in its history, Viet Nam successfully concluded the mission as the chair of the 25th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting  (running from November 6-11), and related activities in 2017.

Under the overarching theme of “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future”, the summit gathered economic leaders of the 21 APEC members to discuss the future of free trade, new drivers for economic growth and the role of APEC in tackling common challenges in the region.

The Leaders of the 21 APEC member economies issued the Da Nang Declaration themed “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future” which stipulates long-standing commitment to APEC’s mission of supporting sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific.

During the APEC Economic Leaders' Week 2017, a series of important events took place including the Senior Officials Meeting (CSOM), the Viet Nam Business Summit (VBS), the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), the Annual Ministerial Meetings (AMM), and the APEC CEO Summit.

On the sidelines of the APEC  Week, the 11 remaining countries of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (“TPP11“) took a significant step forward to finalize a new agreement now referred to as the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership  (CPTPP) to replace for the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement without U.S. involvement. It was clear there would be a need for further changes but that differences had been narrowed down.

As the host of APEC Economic Leaders' Week, Viet Nam represented its status as a positive and responsible member of the international community and its contribution to regional peace, cooperation, and prosperity.

Lifting bilateral ties with partners

Chinese President Xi Jinping conducted his overseas trip to Viet Nam since consolidating his power at a party congress in November 2017. Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son assessed that the visit set a ‘new hallmark’ in the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

During the APEC  Week, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc held talks, agreeing to establish a comprehensive partnership, setting an important milestone in the bilateral ties.
