Deputy PM urges police to tighten traffic order and safety

VNGOP – Standing Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng made the statement during a conference organized by the Ministry of Public Security on July 4 in Hà Nội to review measures implemented to enhance traffic safety in the first six months of 2007 and realize the Government's Resolution 32/2007/NQ-CP on controlling traffic jams and accidents.

According to the reports made by the Ministry of Public Security, in the first half of 2007, there occurred 105 serious traffic accidents, killing 317 and injuring 319. Compared to the same period last year, the increases were 32 cases, 78 deaths and 103 injured respectively. The opposition to traffic polices on duty also went up.

Deputy PM Nguyễn Sinh Hùng requested that, to the end of the year, the public security force should take urgent measures, launch a new nationwide traffic safety campaign, strictly punish traffic law violators, deal with serious traffic accidents, and fight against all negative phenomena among its members.

He also asked the Ministry of Public Security to co-ordinate with the relevant ministries and sectors to address "black spots" where traffic accidents often happen; protect traffic safety corridors; resolve rush-hour jams on busy streets; manage drivers; inspect the units in charge of training, testing and issuing driving licenses; and set up regulations on registering vehicles of the disabled. The Deputy PM ordered the Ministry to play a more active role in promoting traffic safety throughout the country and boost education on traffic safety laws for citizens, as well.
