The National Assembly in November 2009 approved the program to develop the Ninh Thuận nuclear power project, including two plants with the combined capacity of 4,000 MW. The first plant is scheduled to be built in 2014 and completed by 2020.

Over the past time, the Electricity of Việt Nam (EVN) - the investor, related units and local authorities have proactively made necessary preparations for the project, including the selection of Russian providers of technologies. EVN will appoint the EPC contractor after finishing the feasibility report of the project and finding a consultant partner.

Several projects on infrastructure, site clearance, and human resource are also being implemented.

The same day, Deputy PM Hoàng Trung Hải also inspected the construction site of the Vĩnh Tân 2 thermoelectric plant, a part of the Vĩnh Tân Electricity Center in Ninh Thuận’s Tuy Phong District.

With the total investment of US $6.1 billion, the Vĩnh Tân Electricity Center with three plants and a seaport is designed to produce some 28.6 billion KWh annually.
