He stressed that during the Ambassador’s tenure, Viet Nam and Canada upgraded the relations into Comprehensive Partnership during Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s official visit to Viet Nam in November 2017, paving the way for further cooperation in all fields.

Viet Nam attaches great importance to the relations with Canada, he asserted, expecting to enhance the bilateral relationship, especially in fields of politics, economics, security, defense, education and training in the context that the two sides are sharing interests in bilateral ties as well as international and regional forums.

He supposed that as the members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the agreement is important to boosting trade and investment and creates an opportunity for Canada to expand cooperation with other nations in the region.

The same occasion, Deputy PM Minh expressed thanks to Canada for inviting Viet Nam to attend the expanded Group of Seven (G7) Summit and welcomed Canada to make contributions to maintaining peace, cooperation and development in the region.

The Ambassador highly appraised Viet Nam’s economic prospects and the academic achievements of around 14,000 Vietnamese students in Canada, adding that Canada prioritizes granting scholarships to Asian students, 30% of which will be dedicated to Vietnamese.

Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam hosts a reception for Director of the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Global Tuberculosis (TB) Program Tereza Kasaeva, Ha Noi, July 26, 2018 - Photo: VGP/Dinh Nam

The same day, Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam hosted a reception for Director of the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Global Tuberculosis (TB) Program Tereza Kasaeva.

With the support of the program, the prevention and control of TB in Viet Nam has seen progress in terms of technique, technology and implementation, said Mr. Dam.

Currently, the national program against TB in Vietnam has succeeded in dealing with all drug-resistant TB types, Deputy PM Dam said, adding that research and experiment activities have targeted the settlement of TB risks in affected communities, which is expected to sharply reduce new TB cases.

According to the Deputy PM, although Viet Nam is seen as a model in TB combat, the country still faces many challenges in the work.

The Vietnamese Government has launched the national strategy on TB prevention and control and backed and engaged in the WHO initiative of “Find, Treat, Cure TB”, launched by the WHO and the TB Alliance, said Mr. Dam.

Ms.  Tereza Kasaeva highly spoke of Viet Nam’s achievements in TB prevention and control, hoping that the country will take the lead in realizing the strategy on ending TB.

She re-affirmed commitments to closely coordination with Viet Nam in ending TB in the upcoming time.

Each year, Viet Nam gives treatment to over 100,000 TB patients. The diagnosis ratio of new TB cases has reached 81%, higher than the average ratio of 61% across the world, he noted.

Viet Nam still ranks 16th in the world in terms of TB patients, and 13th in drug-resistant TB cases.
