DPM Minh holds talks with US Secretary of State

VGP – Deputy PM, FM Pham Binh Minh highlighted the significance of US Secretary of State’s official visit to Viet Nam, affirming Viet Nam treasures and wishes to boost the comprehensive partnership with the US in a stable, intensive and effective manner.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo starts two-day visit to VN

Minh made the above remarks at his talks with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Ha Noi on Monday.

Pompeo asserted that the US attaches importance to the friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Viet Nam.

He expects Viet Nam to be a strong, independent and prosperous country that plays an increasingly important role in the region.

The two officials showed their pleasure at the positive and practical advancements of the bilateral ties, agreeing to continue deeping the two countries’ comprehensive ties for the benefits of the two people and for peace, stabilty, cooperation and development in the region and the world,

Both sides agreed to give priority to delegation exchanges, especially at high-level visits and contacts while continuing to view trade and investment as the driving force for their overall relationship.

The pair vowed to effectively realize defense agreements and foster education and training and people-to-people exchanges.

They expressed their pleasure at the success of the project on dioxin decomtamination at Da Nang airport and the US side will soon launch the similar project at Bien Hoa airport and enhance support for Viet Nam to overcome the war consequences.

Regarding regional and international issues, including the East Sea situation, the two sides expressed concerns over the complicated developments in the East Sea during the past time.

Both sides reafffirmed their support for peaceful settlement of disputes on the basis of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, for full implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and for early conclusion of a Code of Conduct that is effective and legally-binding one.

Deputy PM, FM Minh and US Secretary of State Pompeo also agreed to continue exchanges and coordination at international forums.

They shared the view that ASEAN needs to maintain its central role in addressing regional issues while ASEAN and the US should further strengthen their strategic partnership on a firm and effective basis to contribute to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

Minh took the occasion to highly value the efforts made by relevant parties in accelerating peace and denuclearization process on the Korean Peninsula.

Viet Nam backs all constructive efforts through dialogues toward realizing a denuclearized Korean Peninsula, pledging to be an active and responsible member of the international community in this process.

The same day, the US Secretary of State left Ha Noi, concluding his official visit to Viet Nam./.
