DPM: Gov’t deeply concerned about ensuring food safety

Incidents relevant to food safety are health matters, seriously affecting socio-economic development. The improvement of food safety is directly or indirectly connected with reaching sustainable development goals.
Speaking at the event, Deputy PM Dam highlighted Viet Nam’s efforts in ensuring food safety which helps the nation earn US$36 billion from exporting agricultural products in 2017.
The nation is home to 10 million farm households and 500,000 food processing factories, which is the huge challenge to guaranteeing food safety and improving the quality of products, he added.
The nation needs more cooperation and support from development partners including the WB, he said, asserting that the Vietnamese Government identifies to focus on establishing a legal framework on food safety.
The nation commits to cooperating with the WB and other partners and expects to learn experience from other nations and organizations to effectively address issues related to food safety, said the Deputy PM.
A report themed “Viet Nam Food Safety Risks Management – Challenges and Opportunities,” released in 2017, recognizes the strengths of the current legal and institutional arrangements for food safety in Viet Nam, especially the risk-based approach that is embraced under the Food Safety Law, while also identifying areas that require further improvements.
