REMARKS

BY DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

H.E. PHAM BINH MINH

At the “Viet Nam Culture – Culinary Day”

Celebrating the 45th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations and 5thAnniversary of Strategic Partnership

between Viet Nam and Singapore

******

Minister Sam Tan Minister of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Social and Family Development,

Dear friends,

Thank you Minister Sam Tam and all Singaporean and Vietnamese friends for joining me tonight to celebrate this remarkable milestone in Viet Nam – Singapore relationship.

Forty-five years ago today marked the start of our bilateral diplomatic relations, which have now grown to become an indispensable strategic partnership.

I am therefore deeply honoured to be here for this special occasion. Of the many times, this official visit is perhaps the most extraordinary.

In this moment of shared joy, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the Governments and peoples of Singapore and Viet Nam, particularly all Singaporeans and Vietnamese present here, for all the achievements of the past forty-five years.

Ladies and Gentlemen

Forty-five years ago, not every one knows how remarkable these ties would expand to embrace all areas of cooperation, from political and security to economic, trade and investment, from education and training to culture and tourism.

And forty-five years on, Viet Nam and Singapore have become each other’s top partners. Singapore is Viet Nam's largest trading partner in ASEAN and eighth largest in the world. Singaporean investment projects are playing a key role in shifting the regional economic structure within Viet Nam. The nine Viet Nam – Singapore Industrial Parks (or VSIPs) have been symbols of the economic and investment ties between our two countries.

Located in the important geo-strategic region of Southeast Asia, Singapore and Viet Nam share many common threads in strategic thinking and vision of the world and our region. We both uphold and promote multilateralism and international law. We both believe in a strong and united ASEAN, whose centrality is key to the regional architecture.

More importantly, the partnership between Viet Nam and Singapore have benefited not only our two peoples, but also peace, cooperation, development and prosperity in the region; and, thus contributed to the realization of the ASEAN Community.

As we celebrate the prospering of our relations, we remember and express our gratefulness to generations of Vietnamese and Singaporean leaders whose vision, courage and dedication have brought us to where we are today.

It is in their footsteps that we will work together to elevate our relationship to a new height.

Ladies and Gentlemen

As for any strong and lasting relationship, it is the cultural bonds that bring our peoples closer together.

For many Vietnamese, Singapore is a unique culture, an exciting tourist destination, and the Merlion is a place to visit at least once in their lifetime.

And here in Singapore I am sure each of you have more than once tasted the essence of the Vietnamese culinary art.

The community of 12,000 Vietnamese studying and working in Singapore, and the hundreds of thousands of tourists that our two countries are exchanging, have built a bridge of friendship between our two countries.

Together, these have painted a diverse, vivid and vibrant panorama of Viet Nam – Singapore cultural exchange.

And I strongly believe that the similarities in culture, closeness in lifestyle and inseparability in people-to-people exchanges will be a springboard for our bilateral relations to take flight.

Ladies and gentlemen, I invite you to enjoy the exquisite Vietnamese cuisine and the quintessential performance of arts and music, as well as an exhibition of outstanding fine arts by Vietnamese and Singaporean artists. I hope the memories of today will remain in your heart.

With that, and on this special occasion of our bilateral relations - may the friendship and Strategic Partnership between Viet Nam and Singapore continue to flourish and prosper.

Thank you./.
