Cotton Day 2017 for first time in VN

VGP - The Cotton Day 2017, the first of its kind in Viet Nam, is taking place in Ho Chi Minh City.

September 12, 2017 3:55 PM GMT+7
The event  included a seminar to discuss Viet Nam-U.S. relations, Viet Nam’s garment-textile industry and impacts from the U.S. trade policy, and purchase trends, and a fashion show.

VITAS President Vu Duc Giang said that Viet Nam has to import a large amount of cotton as the domestic sector meets only 0.04% of demand. Among supply sources, cotton from the U.S. is considered the highest quality, accounting for up to 60% of total cotton imports.

He said that the Cotton Day is expected to enable Vietnamese firms to use the COTTON USA label on their products. Since 2017, the CCI has helped Vietnamese fashion brands use U.S. cotton to enhance their products’ quality.

The event aims to connect Vietnamese apparel enterprises with partners and suppliers and gives Vietnamese companies the latest information on global supply and demand for cotton.

The Cotton Day is one of the CCI’s biggest events in Asia. The event was initiated in Japan in the 1990s and has been held in the Republic of Korea, China, Thailand, and Bangladesh.

According to VITAS, despite challenges facing Viet Nam’s garment and textile sector, including pressure from anti-dumping tax on fibre in Turkey and India, the sector still earned US$19.8 billion from exports in the first eight months of 2017, up 9.9% year on year.

The Cotton Day 2017, co-hosted by CCI and the Vietnam Textile and Garment Association (VITAS).
