Deputy PM Vũ Văn Ninh on April 23 hosted a working session with some ministries, sectors and Mekong provinces about construction of temporary rice storehouses and policies on agricultural production and consumption designated for farmers.

According to the ministry, in March alone, local firms signed contracts to export over 1.8 million tons of rice, up 278% against February and 67.1% against last March. This is the biggest-ever month-on-month hike.

As of April 16, Vietnamese enterprises had bought nearly 1.1 million tons of rice for temporary storage, realizing 108% of the target set by the Government. They bought paddy rice at prices of at least VND 5,000 per kilogram.

By the end of March, the total capacity of rice storehouses in the Mekong Delta had been one million tons, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Diệp Kỉnh Tần said, noting that the capacity will increase to 1.5 million tons soon, and to 3 million tons by the end of this year, compared with the target of 4 million tons.

Deputy PM Vũ Văn Ninh highly appreciated enterprises that have completed purchase of rice for temporary storage according to the decision of the PM, helping stabilize paddy rice prices and ensure farmers to gain profits.

The Deputy PM instructed the ministry to consider the amount of paddy rice held by farmers. Rice purchase for temporary purchase will continue, if necessary, he said.

Regarding sugar import, the Deputy PM assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to consider the balance. If domestic production can meet demand, no sugar import is allowed, he said.
