Nghi Sơn 1 Thermal Power Plant, invested by the Electricity of Việt Nam (EVN), has the capacity of 600MW and an annual output of 3.6 billion kWh. It will consume some 1.6 million tons of coal dust per year.

The project is conducted in the EPC form by Japanese contractor Marubeni. The EPC contract is worth some US $981 million, 85% of which comes from Japan’s ODA.

The plant’s first turbine will become operational in the 4th quarter of 2013 and the second in the 2nd quarter of 2014, helping to ensure sufficient power supply to the Northern part of the central region and facilitate socio-economic development here, especially the national-level Nghi Sơn Economic Zone in Thanh Hóa.

At the commencement ceremony, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng said the plant’s construction creates conditions for the development of other important works in the zone, including the Nghi Sơn 2 Thermal Power Plant (1,200 MW), Nghi Sơn Petrochemical Plant with the annual capacity of 10 million tons, Nghi Sơn Cement Plant, and Nghi Sơn Steel Plant.

The PM asked the investor to coordinate closely with the contractors and the locality to secure the construction progress.
