Vision towards 2100

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha described  the upcoming conference as of extreme significance as the previous development modal in the region is no longer appropriate. The planning policies, regional zones,  unattached and incomprehensive management, impacts of climate change led to unsustainable growth and unstable lives there.

In response to the urgent issue, in July, 2017, PM Phuc visited the Netherlands to learn about experience and seek cooperation from the European country in climate change adaptation.

Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son was quoted as saying that during the visit PM Phuc inspected the sea dyke system and famous irrigation work in the Netherlands and how the country responds to climate change and sea level rises.

The inspection had positive influences in the Vietnamese Government’s decision in climate change response in favor of sustainable growth, prevention of saltwater intrusion, erosion, and flooding in the Mekong Delta Region, Mr. Son asserted.

In addition, PM Phuc exchanged with the Dutch Government to select the Mekong Delta Region of Viet Nam to build a new model of sustainable growth transformation on the basis of natural and residential conditions; as well as high-tech science.

PM Phuc and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte signed a Letter of Intent to cooperate on the facilitation and implementation of large-scale transformative projects for a sustainable Mekong Delta. This was regarded as a strategic step in the bilateral ties to implement the Strategic Partnership Arrangement on Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security in 2014.

Upon the visit, PM Phuc immediately instructed Vietnamese ministries, agencies, and localities to organize the upcoming conference.

Minister Ha was convinced that the conference will sum up large-scale ideas which are supposed to support the Vietnamese Government and Mekong Delta localities to define groups of strategic measures on large transformative modals on sustainable Mekong Delta with a vision towards 2100 in response to irreversible changes on natural conditions.

Four requirements

Minister Ha also mentioned four tasks of the PM for the upcoming conference as follows:

Firstly, making a new, strategic, systematic, and breaking decision on development viewpoint, prioritized orientation, master plan on territorial zone marking, and appropriate mechanisms for relevant sides.

Secondly, adopting feasible, tractable plans and solutions; short-term and long-term measures to ensure lives for Mekong Delta residents in favor of stability and development.

Thirdly, promoting scientific and technological application and management on the basis of practical researches; taking full use of the fourth industrial revolution; upholding the role of domestic and foreign experts and scientists;

Fourthly, optimizing resources (ODA, preferential loans, credit loans, and private sources) to develop the Mekong Delta Region./.
