Canon to build schools in remote areas

VNGOP – Japan’s Canon will provide more than US$ 400,000 for the construction of 16 schools in remote areas of the country from now until 2010.

A memorandum of understanding underscoring the aid was signed in Hà Nội on July 18 by President and CEO of the Canon group Tsuneji Uchida and Deputy Minister of Education and Training Phm Vũ Lun.

Canon will kick off the project by building 15 classrooms in the northern mountainous provinces of Tuyên Quang and Hòa Bình and central Thanh Hóa province. Work on the classrooms is expected to be completed by the end of October this year.

After entering the country five years ago, Canon Việt Nam now boasts one factory in Hà Nội’s Thăng Long industrial park (IP) and two more in the Quế Võ and Tiên Son IPs in northern Bc Ninh province.

Its main products include laser printers, ink-jet printers, photocopiers and cameras.

Canon Việt Nam employs more than 13,000 local workers and became Việt Nam’s leading exporter with revenues of US$ 700 million in 2006. Pundits believe that figure will climb to US$ 1 billion by year end.
