Cần Thơ set to become an industrialized city before 2020

VNGOVNet – Prime Minister has just signed Decision 21/2007/QĐ-TTg to approve the master plan for socio-economic development of Cần Thơ City in the period 2006-2020. The plan aims at making Cần Thơ a first-grade city before 2010 and a basically industrialized city before 2020.

Under the Decision, the city’s development focuses are on processing industries using advanced and clean technologies, such as food processing, energy, mechanical engineering and manufacturing, chemicals, biochemicals, biological products, electrics, electronics, and new materials.

Specific targets are to make the most of potentials and advantages for a fast, sustainable, cost-effective, highly competitive economy on domestic and international arena; and to build the economic structure in the order: industries, services, and hi-tech agriculture. Other targets are to make the local economy grow faster than that of the national does, to achieve a GDP growth rate in 2006-2020 of 17% per year, to make local payment into the State budget in 2006-2020 approximately 17.1% of GDP, and to make an increase of 20.8% a year in export turnover in the same period.

In terms of trade and services, the city strives to promote itself as an ideal, secure and friendly tourist destination and a rendezvous of the ‘Mekong River civilization’ by developing the services of high value as a catalyst to bolster the development of sectors, particularly those in transport, telecommunications, technology, finance and banking.
