The move was made following a meeting of the Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control on Saturday.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, the Ministry of Education and Training has worked with localities to provide instructions to schools to carry out preventive measures in accordance with guidance of the Ministry of Health, according to Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Deputy Director General of the Secondary Education Department under the Ministry of Education and Training.

Thanh said schools and universities have disinfected classrooms and conducted training for lecturers and teachers.

Earlier on February 17, member of the Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, led by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc, agreed that "Viet Nam is safe" as the country has employed a string of drastic measures to effectively put the epidemic under control.

The Government set up the steering committee on January 30 and declared the coronavirus outbreak an epidemic in Viet Nam on February 1.

On February 3, the Government ordered compulsory 14-day quanratine for all incoming travellers from the epidemic-hit areas.

The Southeast Asian country has confirmed 16 COVID-19 patients so far and 15 of them, including two Chinese toursts and one American citizen, have been cleared of the virus and exited hospitals.

On global scale, 77,794 people have been confirmed contracting the virus, up 559 cases over the last 24 hours, according to the World Health Organization.

Meanwhile, the Republic of Korea reported its fourth death from the virus on Sunday and added 123 new cases to bring the total confirmed cases to 556./.
