CEO Summit 2006 - Creating new opportunities for shared development

VNGOVNet - In the morning of November 17, the APEC CEO Summit 2006 started at the National Convention Center, under the theme “Towards One Community: Creating New Opportunities for Shared Development”. Vietnamese State President Nguyễn Minh Triết attended the opening ceremony and delivered the keynote address on “Creating an Asia Pacific Community: Challenges for APEC”.

Over 1,100 representatives from leading multi-national corporations within the Asian Pacific region participated in the conference. Some of those are leaders of well-known corporations, such as Mr. Thomas J. Donohue – President and CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce; Mr. William Rhodes – Senior Vice Chairman of Citigroups Inc. and the Chairman of Citigroup and Citibank; and Mr. Michael Ducker – Executive Vice President of FedEx International Corporation.

The CEO first-day discussion focused on the followings:

“The world economy today: What are the opportunities and the threats?” moderated by Mr. Thomas J. Donohue is an open-forum discussion for the APEC CEOs to talk of the state of the world economy, requirements to resume the WTO talks, and the threats to global financial stability.

Under the topic “Bridging the development gap within the Asia Pacific: How can APEC promote shared development?” moderated by Mr. Clay Chandler, Asia Editor and Senior Writer, Fortune, TimeWarner, the delegates argued over APEC’s focuses, capacity building approach, and key priorities in terms of building institutions and developing human resources.

The theme of “Sustaining economic reforms: The challenges for governments and business” moderated by Robert Friedman, International Editor, Fortune, TimeWarner, aimed at the main priorities for government, political challenges, and the keys of corporate governance.

Other discussions included “Successfully competing for Foreign Direct Investment”, “The challenges of foreign direct investment: a view from Thailand” and “The economic security threats of the future: are the responses of today adequate?”

Since the first time held being in 1996, APEC CEO Summit is organized annually along with the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and becomes an important forum for leaders, businessmen, policy makers, and researchers to share experience and propose recommendations, suggestions and solutions aimed at strengthening economic cooperation within the Asia-Pacific region and between the member economies with the rest of the world.
