Attending the celebration of Buddha’s 2551st birthday (Buddhist calendar) at the Vietnam Buddhist Institute in Sóc Sơn (Hanoi) on May 31, State President Nguyễn Minh Triết lauded Vietnamese Buddhism for traditional patriotism, religious and humanitarian activities that have benefited both the religion and the country, especially in the recent years of renewal.

The President reiterated the government's policy to respect and ensure the public’s right to religious freedom. He called on the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and Vietnamese Buddhist followers in and outside the country to join hand in national construction and defense.

Buddha's birthday celebration at Non Pagoda (Sóc Sơn, Hanoi)

For several days, Buddha's birthday has been solemnly celebrated at all pagodas in Hanoi. The authorities of the city and districts have met and congratulated Buddhist dignitaries. On this occasion, following the tradition of “saving people from misfortune and sufferings”, Buddhist monks and followers in Hanoi have launched many social and humanitarian activities to assist the disabled, disadvantaged children, and poor patients.

In Hồ Chí Minh City, thousands of Buddhist monks and followers have joined Buddha's birthday anniversary held solemnly at all pagodas.

In Thừa Thiên-Huế, Đà Nẵng and other provinces, leaders of the local Party Committees, authorities and the Fatherland Fronts congratulated the Executive Boards of the local Buddhist Sanghas, Buddhist dignitaries, monks and followers. They also facilitated the anniversary to be organized safely and ceremonially.
