The Vietnamese Embassy in Brazil said that the counselor was abducted by a group of armed kidnappers while he and his relatives were visiting the city of Rio de Janeiro on August 16 (local time).

In his message to the Brazilian FM, Deputy PM Khiêm stressed that the Vietnamese Government attaches great attention to the case and has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) and relevant bodies to adopt urgent measures in collaboration with Brazil’s partners for the rescue.

MoFA also met Brazilian Ambassador in Hà Nội Mendoza Neto da Lima and the Vietnamese Embassy in Brazil contacted the Brazilian Foreign Ministry and the authority of Rio de Janeiro, calling upon prompt actions to rescue Mr. Nam.

For its part, Brazil reiterated that this was the first-ever abduction of a diplomat in Brazil. Expressing their regret, Brazilian authorities vowed to do their utmost to free the diplomat. The two sides pledged to closely coordinate with each other to keep the situation under control, taking appropriate steps to quickly address the case, and free Mr. Nam.
