The Government chief recently issued Decision 29/QĐ-TTg on cotton development program till 2015 and with visions towards 2020 to enrich the supplies of input materials for the garment and textile industry; gradually meet domestic consumption; and reduce trade gap.

The decision paves the way for intensive cultivation of cotton crop, higher productivity, better quality, stronger competitiveness, and environmental protection in Việt Nam.

Based on some recent statistical data, the cotton growing area has been shrinking severely to less than 3,000 hectares and the yield only met around 2% of the textile industry’s demand.

According to the PM-ratified decision, by 2015, the cotton area is expected to expand to 30,000 hectares and surge 2.5 times in 2020.

The Government intends to mobilize all resources for developing cotton production in favor of cotton growers, traders and producers while attaching more attention to technical and scientific researches and transfer for higher competitiveness.

Especially, a price stabilization fund will be founded to secure the purchase price in the interest of cotton growers and the domestic cotton sector.

The Government entrusts the Việt Nam National Textile and Garment Group (Vinatex) to act the major clue.
