Big C Viet Nam resumes purchase of local garments after suspension

VGP – Big C Viet Nam has committed to resuming purchase of garments from 50 local suppliers under signed contracts following a meeting with the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade today.

July 04, 2019 5:55 PM GMT+7

Do Thang Hai, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade released the news at the ministry’s press briefing the same day.

Earlier on July 2, Thailand’s Central Group - the owner of the BigC supermarket chain – sent a letter to Vietnamese suppliers saying it has decided to suspend procurement of garments from this month until further notice to restructure the business.

The suspension surprised 200 local garment producers as they have signed contracts with the supermarket system.

A representative of the Thai Central Group also pledged to fully resume purchase of contracted garments from other 150 suppliers within the next 15 days, according to Hai.

The Central Group became the new owner of the Big C Viet Nam, with a network of 43 stores and 30 shopping centers, since April 2016.
