The Standing Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs said that the year of APEC 2006 in general and the 14th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in particular is the most important diplomatic event of Vietnam this year. From November 12 to 19, the APEC 2006 Economic Leaders’ Week will be organized, including 17 major activities, especially the followings:

  • Concluding APEC Senior Official Meeting (November 12-13),
  • APEC Business Advisory Council Meeting (November 14-16),
  • 18th APEC Ministerial Meeting (November 15-16),
  • APEC CEO Summit (November 17-19),
  • 14th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting (November 18-19).

Besides, there will be many other events, such as the ever largest-scale Doing Business with Vietnam Forum participated by more than 700 leading enterprises within Asia-Pacific region, seminars, exhibitions, marginal dialogues and meetings among the enterprises as well as between them and governmental officials. About 10,000 participants are expected to take part in the APEC 2006 Economic Leaders’ Week.

On the occasion of the APEC 2006 Economic Leaders’ Week, at the invitations of Vietnamese leaders, the top leaders of five member-economies will pay official visits to Vietnam – Chinese General Secretary-State President Hu Jintao, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet Jeria, US President George W. Bush, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During the APEC 2006 Economic Leaders’ Week, in the two important meetings on November 18 and 19, the leaders will focus on two following topics:

- "Speeding up trade and investment in a changing world” in which the important contents are WTO and Doha Round-related issues, regional and bilateral free trade agreements, the Hanoi Action Plan to further implement the Busan Roadmap ratified in South Korea last year, as well as the objectives approved by APEC previously.

- "The core factors ensuring to activeness, growth and sustainable development in APEC,” focusing on the issues of security, personnel, technical-economic cooperation and others,  including the reform of APEC process.

The ratification of five important documents is expected during the APEC 2006:

- Declaration of the 14th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting

- Declaration of 18th APEC Ministerial Meeting

- Hanoi Action Plan to implement the Busan Roadmap

- Report on the reform of the APEC process

- Report of APEC Senior Officials reported to the APEC Ministers.

As to the preparatory work, all protocol and logistic work, security, content and scenario for the meetings are completed. It is expected that over 500 Vietnamese and around 1,500 foreign reporters will cover the APEC 2006 Economic Leaders’ Week.

The APEC 2006 Economic Leaders’ Week–the most outstanding event–will take place at a special meaningful moment when Vietnam has just become a WTO full member. So the country has a stronger voice to call other APEC member-economies to promote multilateral economic relations. The WTO accession will make the APEC 2006 Economic Leaders’ Week more successful, confirmed Standing Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Lê Công Phụng.
