An Giang promotes tourism

VGP – Facing negative impacts caused by the global economic turmoil, the southern province of An Giang plans to promote tourism as a way to raise revenue and prevent economic recession.

The province will focus on infrastructure projects, investing in tourist development of the Mekong Sub-region. The model of homestay in M Hòa Hưng tourist site (Long Xuyên City) and Chăm village Châu Phong (Tân Châu) has been launched to appeal foreign visitors.

Eco-tourism and sightseeing tours in the Trà Sư Cajuput Forest was boosted. Boat tours to the Châu Đốc floating market and the river confluence (Châu Đốc-An Phú-Tân Châu) are prioritized.

The construction of a 40-ha multi-functional tourist center, comprising of an operating center, convention hall, pilgrimage site and resort areas on the top of the Cm mount was launched. The project will be implemented in 2 phases from now until 2010 with a total cost of more than VND 580 billion. 

With loans from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, An Giang has inaugurated the Châu Đốc Pier and the Vĩnh Xương Waterway Station to receive transit international tourists traveling by waterway.

The province has also beefed up cooperation with other localities and Cambodia.

An Giang continues to upgrade National Highway 91 and provincial roads 943 and 941, while widening Road 55A from Long Xuyên City to tourist sites in Long Xuyên, Châu Đốc, Tri Tôn and Tnh Biên Districts.

Particularly, the province will develop tourist handicraft villages to diversify tourist products and create jobs for local people.

It strives to gain VND 1,200 billion and attract 4.5 million visitors this year.
