Top leaders of the two biggest organizations in Southeast Asia - ASEAN and the ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) – had a first-ever meeting, initiated by Việt Nam, right before the opening of the 16th ASEAN Summit this afternoon in Hà Nội.

As Chair of ASEAN in 2010, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng stressed that ASEAN is entering a new stage of development – moving towards the ASEAN Community on the basis of the ASEAN Charter and this process requires essential participation of AIPA and parliaments of all member-states as well as the collaboration of the bloc’s legislative and executive bodies.

The Vietnamese Government chief said that, by opening this meeting, ASEAN leaders want to listen to opinions from AIPA about designing and realizing action programs and plans to convert the preset goals into reality.

NA Chairman Nguyễn Phú Trọng, also Chair of AIPA in the term of 2009-2010, lauded ASEAN leaders for organizing the meeting. “This is an important forum for two biggest regional organizations to discuss at the top level many regional issues,” stated Chairman Trọng.

He described the building of security-political, economic, and socio-cultural communities as ASEAN’s vision to the future, which needs the efforts from all member-states as well as close and effective collaboration of legislative and executive bodies.

Chairman Trọng sated that, by undertaking the Chairmanship of AIPA in 2009-2010, the Vietnamese NA wants to boost cooperation between AIPA and ASEAN in order to realize the adopted resolutions and documents, for an ASEAN of solidarity, peace and prosperity; promote ASEAN-AIPA dialogues; raise public awareness of ASEAN’s identities; strengthen intra-ASEAN cooperation while expanding external cooperation.

Việt Nam expects to receive supports and assistance from all ASEAN members, so that it can successfully fulfill its mission during the ASEAN Presidency Year, said the chief of the Vietnamese legislative body.
