Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh made the above statement at the International Symposium “Viet Nam – ASEAN: 25 year journey and the way forward,” held on August 19.

Since its admission to the bloc 25 years ago, Viet Nam is proud to be part of the ASEAN family and proud to call fellow member states brothers, Minh said.

Viet Nam is honored to have played an active part in a number of significant achievements of ASEAN, notably in realizing ASEAN-10, promoting and concretizing the ASEAN Community-building goals, formulating the ASEAN Charter, and upholding the centrality and international standing of ASEAN.

Step by step, the country has learnt from fellow member states, grown alongside ASEAN brothers, and become fully integrated in ASEAN.

Throughout this process, Viet Nam has always acted as a proactive and responsible member and made all effort to the robust development of ASEAN.

Viet Nam’s accession to ASEAN, over 25 years ago, heralds the dawn of the country’s open-door era and over extensive regional and international integration, said Minh, expressing thanks ASEAN brothers for their support during this period.

As the ASEAN 2020 Chair, to build on the illustrious foundation of the past 25 years, Viet Nam is making all effort to promote a cohesive and responsive ASEAN Community in tackling challenges and difficulties of a world undergoing complex and unpredictable changes in order to proceed with conviction.

The future development of member states is inseparable from that of ASEAN, and it is our common responsibility and interest to forge a united, strong ASEAN with commensurate standing in the region and the world, the Deputy PM, FM emphasized.

The event drew the participation of former high-level leaders of the Vietnamese Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Vu Khoan, former Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister; Nguyen Dy Nien, former Foreign Minister, and high-ranking politicians from ASEAN member states like Marty Natalegawa, former Foreign Minister of Indonesia; Bounkert Sangsomsak, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, former ASEAN SOM leader of Laos; Le Luong Minh, former ASEAN Secretary General and Lim Jock Hoi, the incumbent ASEAN Secretary General./.
