The three-day event drew the participation of nearly 200 ASEAN education chiefs and high-ranking officials from European and Oceanian associate members.

On behalf of the ASEAN President, Vietnamese Deputy PM, Minister of Education and Training Nguyễn Thiện Nhân said education and training cooperation among ASEAN member countries would be an important premise for the bloc to realize its concluded agreements.

Participants to the meeting expressed their special interest in Việt Nam’s project to popularize freely Internet to 40,000 schools nationwide ranging from nursery to secondary levels.

The host Education Minister, Mr. Datu Jesli A Lapus, stated that Việt Nam’s educational achievements truly reflect its great efforts for renovation and are the valuable lessons for the other ASEAN members to consult.

Support for Việt Nam’s initiative ‘Life-long Study Center’

Việt Nam currently has an effective SEAMEO Regional Training Center (SEAMEO–RETRAC) in Hồ Chí Minh City. It hoped ASEAN Education Ministers to help develop another SEAMEO Center on Life-long Study.

Upon hearing the introduction of the Vietnamese Life-long Study Center, all ASEAN education chiefs voiced their support for Việt Nam to develop this feasible model.

The 47th SEAMEO Council Meeting will be held in Việt Nam in 2010 under the rotating rule.

SEAMEO was established on November 30, 1965, currently with full participation of all 11 Southeast Asian countries and associate members like France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Netherlands, Norway and Spain, to spur the regional cooperation in education, science and culture.

Việt Nam became an official member of the organization since February 10, 1992.
