ASEAN, China should consolidate foundations for solid connectivity, says PM

Addressing the Summit, PM Phuc stressed the importance of the strategic partnership between ASEAN and China and the significant benefits of the relationship for both sides and for peace, stability and cooperation for development in the region.

He shared the view that the two sides should further strengthen dialogue and cooperation in trust building, uphold international law, build up behavior standards in order to contribute to an open, transparent and rule-based architecture in the region.

The Government chief also voiced support for ASEAN and China to consolidate and advance foundations for solid connectivity in terms of trust, physical and people aspects.

Regarding the East Sea issue, PM Phuc said there remain complicated developments, causing concerns among all sides may may adversely affect regional stability.

He called on ASEAN and China to continue upholding their agreed principles on promoting dialogues and trust building, respecting international law, developing and abiding by the common behavior standards, and peacefully settling disputes on the basis of international law and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, avoiding militarization and actions that may further complicate the situation, fully implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and formulating an effective and practical Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

Speaking at the event, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang agreed that ASEAN and China should continue maintaining close economic, trade, investment linkages to realize their trade and investment goals of US$1,000 billion and US$150 billion respectively by 2020.

Premier Li announced the plan to contribute US$10 million in addition to the ASEAN-China cooperation fund and a program to invite 1,000 youngsters from ASEAN nations to visit China.

He affirmed that China will continue making efforts to join hands with ASEAN to complete the COC in the next three years and fully implement the DOC, making contributions to peace, stability and freedom of aviation and navigation in the East Sea.

After the meeting, the two sides agreed to adopt the ASEAN-China Strategic Partnership Vision 2030 and the Joint Declaration on science, technology and renovation.
