VGP - Through the Asia Development Bank (ADB), the Japanese Special Fund will give Việt Nam a technical support package worth of US $1 million to establish feasible researches on building two model research universities in Hà Nội and Đà Nẵng in 2009.

According to ADB, the Project,  focusing on science and technology, will help design a policy and regulatory framework for future research universities, further renovating tertiary education in order to compete on the international arena and meeting the demands of labor market.

ADB considers Việt Nam one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia, with an average GDP growth rate of 7.5%. The country targets to become an industrialized country by 2020. It is expected that these new model research universities will be scientific centers built adjacent to hi-tech parks or industrial zones.

ADB revealed that the World Bank is planning to fund other two model universities in Hồ Chí Minh City and Cần Thơ.

In 2001, ADB helped establish the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Hồ Chí Minh City. The Bank is also financing some teacher training universities and colleges in Việt Nam.
