A new era for VN-Greece friendship and cooperation

VNGOP – At the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyễn Tấn Dũng, PM of the Hellenic Republic Kostas Karamanlis and his spouse started the official visit to Vietnam. The two PMs pledged in their talks in the morning of May 27 in Hanoi to boost the bilateral friendship and cooperation, especially in economy, trade and investment.

In the talks, the two PMs agreed to further deepen the Vietnam-Greece relationship on the long-term basis of mutual benefit. In the near future, the two sides will negotiate and sign framework agreements on economic cooperation as well as organize activities to promote trade, investement, tourism and cultural exchanges to increase mutual understanding between the people and business communities of the two countries.

The two PMs also discussed many specific fields of cooperation, including shipbuilding, marine transport, tourism, and preserving historical sites.

PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng asked the Greek Government to help Vietnam enhance her economic and commercial ties with the EU as well as urge the EU to readjust the anti-dumping tax rates against Vietnamese exported leather footwear and recognize Vietnam's market economy status.

The guest affirmed Greece's desire to develop multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam. He pledged to support Vietnam in boosting trade ties with the EU and the country's bid for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council in 2008-2009. The Greek PM invited his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyễn Tấn Dũng to visit Greece and the host accepted with pleasure.

Right after the talks, PM Nguyễn Tấn Dũng and PM Kostas Karamanlis witnessed the signing ceremony of the Vietnam-Greece agreement on tourist cooperation.

In the afternoon of May 27, Greek PM Kostas Karamanlis paid a courtesy visit to State President Nguyễn Minh Triết, in which he reconfirmed and highly spoke of Vietnam's socio-economic development in the recent years. He also expressed Greece's desire to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam.

President Nguyễn Minh Triết praised the visit to Vietnam by the high-ranking delegation of the Greek Government headed by PM Kostas Karamanlis. The President was convinced that the visit will be a new landmark in the increasingly-developed friendship between the two countries.
