45th anniversary of VN-Canada diplomatic ties celebrated

VGP - The Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations in Ho Chi Minh City on August 21 has held an exchange to mark the 45th anniversary of the establishment of Viet Nam - Canada diplomatic relations (August 21, 1973-2018).

Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Foreign Affairs Department Nguyen Tuan speaks at the ceremony

Addressing the event, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Foreign Affairs Department Nguyen Tuan spoke highly of the relations between Viet Nam and Canada which have continued to develop positively over recent years.

He noted that in recent years, along with regular meetings between senior leaders, Viet Nam and Canada have increased the exchange of delegations and step up bilateral partnership, focusing on the areas of politics-diplomacy, economy-trade, education-training, and development cooperation.

In particular, on the occasion of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s official visit to Viet Nam in November 2017, the two countries issued a joint statement on the establishment of their comprehensive partnership.

Mr. Tuan lauded the efforts of the Consulate General and community of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City in working with the city to organise various activities to foster people-to-people exchanges and raise public awareness of different issues such as environmental protection, climate change response, women and children empowerment, support for the disabled, and the fight against human trafficking.

In his speech, Canadian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Kyle Nunas emphasised that there have been many important achievements in the relationship between Viet Nam and Canada, especially in the areas of trade, education-training, culture, and tourism.

Visits by leaders of the two nations have opened up new cooperation prospects for the two countries in many fields, he said.

Nunas suggested that Viet Nam and Canada should exert more efforts to realise cooperation activities, thus forging stronger affiliation in all fields.

Along with many multilateral organisations and international forums in which both countries are members, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is also a good chance for the two nations to promote economic cooperation, he added.

Currently, Viet Nam is Canada’s biggest trade partner in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations with bilateral trade reaching nearly US$5 billion in 2017. Canada ranks 14th in the list of 112 nations and territories investing in Viet Nam with 149 projects worth a total of US$4.1 billion.
