37th ASEAN Summit slated for November 12-15 in virtual format

VGP – As the ASEAN Chair, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc will preside over the 37th ASEAN Summit and related meetings from November 12-15 in the form of video conference, Foreign Ministry's Deputy Spokesperson Duong Hoai Nam told a room of reporters Thursday.

The 37th ASEAN Summit and related meetings are the most important events during Viet Nam’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020 including the 37th ASEAN Summit, ASEAN Plus One Summits with China, Japan, the RoK, India, the U.S., Australia, and the UN, the ASEAN-New Zealand Leaders’ Summit to commemorate the 45th anniversary of dialogue relations, the 23rd ASEAN Plus Three Summit, the RCEP Summit, the Mekong-Japan Summit, the Mekong-RoK Summit, the 10th Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Viet Nam (CLMV) Summit, and the Cambodia-Laos-Viet Nam Summit on Development Triangle Area.

On the occasion, the ASEAN Woman Entrepreneur Summit and the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit will also take place.

PM Phuc and leaders of ASEAN and partners will discuss on the process of the ASEAN Community building and finalization of ASEAN initiatives in 2020 and promote relations with the bloc’s partners.

The leaders will discuss on regional and international issues of shared concern, positioning and promoting ASEAN centrality amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the cohesive and responsive spirit, ASEAN has accomplished the doal goal of maintaining efforts in Community building and curbing the COVID-19 pandemic in association with promoting comprehensive recovery, said the Deputy Spokesperson. 

The grouping has basically finalized all priorities and initiatives on schedule including the mid-term review of ASEAN Community Vision 2025, the review of ASEAN Charter implementation, the issuance of the Ha Noi Declaration relating to the post-2025 ASEAN Community Vision, according to Nam.

Regarding initiatives in COVID-19 fight, ASEAN member countries and partners have contributed US$10 million to the regional COVID-19 response fund.

Nam said the leaders will announce the establishment of ASEAN Regional Reserve of Medical Supplies (RRMS) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and ASEAN Centre for emerging diseases and public health emergencies,  at the 37th ASEAN Summit./.
