25th meeting of Mekong River Commission Council held in VN

VGP – Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha on November 28 chaired the 25th meeting of the Mekong River Commission Council (MRC) in Ha Long City, the northern province of Quang Ninh in the context Viet Nam's chairing of the MRC Council in 2018.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Ha said that the MRC has realized its tasks for the socio-economic development of country members over the recent two decades. 

Thanks to the solidarity and high determination of country members and the assistance from the development and dialogue partners, the MRC has gained crucial achievements, he asserted.  

The annual ministerial-level meeting attracted the participation of 120 delegates from four country members of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam, two dialogue nations including China and Myanmar and 25 development partners of the MRC. 

Delegates at the meeting reviewed and evaluated the operation of the MRC in 2018, discussed and agreed the working plan in 2019 of the MRC, assessed the mid-term implementation of the 2016-2020 strategic plan and the rate of progress of the action plan for Pak Beng hydropower project. 

Within the framework of the meeting, a meeting with dialogue nations and a consultancy meeting with development partners were also be held, which aim to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between nations. 

At the meeting with dialogue nations, China and Myanmar asserted to continue coordinating with the commission. China confirmed to share statistics, send professionals and promote technical researches between the nation and the MRC. 

Development partners confirmed to join hand with the Commission to provide financial support and technical consultancy in 2019 and the upcoming years. 

At the meeting, delegates witnessed the signing ceremony of the agreement between the MRC and development partners, including the €4.82 million for enhancing trans-border cooperation on water resources at the Lower Mekong Basin in 2019-2021 phase. 

The next meeting of the MRC will be organized at the end of 2019 in Cambodia.
