The 13th ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Nay Pyi Taw, November 20, 2017

The event is to prepare for the 12th ASEM Summit scheduled in October 2018 in Brussels, Belgium.

This year's event has the theme  "Strengthening Partnership for Peace and Sustainable Development". Foreign Ministers from 51 Asian and European countries are expected to focus on cooperation in areas of shared interest, such as countering terrorism, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, and poverty eradication.

Especially, the FMs will discuss  measures to promote ASEM partnership in a more dynamic and closer manner, including people-to-people exchanges, transport, tourism, culture, education, trade, investment, regional and international issues of common concern.

On this occasion, Deputy PM Pham Binh Minh was one of the four Heads of delegation who were invited to deliver a speech at the first session on Conference on “Harmonious connection between peace and sustainable growth.”

The ASEM summit is organized every two years, in Asia and in Europe alternatively, to set out the priorities of the partnership. Ministerial meetings are organized in between the ASEM summits, including one meeting of Foreign Affairs ministers.

After over 20 years of formulation and development (since 1996), ASEM has become an important dialogue and cooperative mechanism among the two continents, comprising 53 members including four permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, 12 members of the G20 Group, representing 68% of the world population, around 55% of GDP, and about 60% of the global trade value.

As one of the founder of ASEM, Viet Nam has upheld the positive role in the mechanism.

Viet Nam has proposed 22 initiatives and  cooperated in 26 others especially in such area as culture, healthcare, transport, energy and food security, climate change, science-technology, tourism, economics, green growth, and social security.

As scheduled, the FMs will pass a final declaration, a working program in the 2017-2019 period, and new initiatives especially one of Viet Nam on “ASEM Conference on joint action to combat climate change to fulfill the sustainable growth goals."./.
