132nd IPU Assembly opens

VGP – More than 900 legislators around the world gathered in Ha Noi on Saturday to attend the opening ceremony of the 132nd Inter-parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU-132).

IPU-132 is a political event of great historical and diplomatic significance, which shows the proactiveness of the National Assembly of Viet Nam in further integrating into the world and its responsible participation in IPU.

Under the theme “The sustainable development goals: Turning words into action”, the Assembly will discuss measures towards sustainable development with gender equality objectives integrated into all activities of sustainable development goals similar to the process of realising millennium goals.

IPU-132 provides a chance to assess the outcomes of the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to propose the Sustainable Development Goals for the post-2015 period.

It is also important for IPU to discuss the issues of the role of Parliaments in the fields of cyber security, water management, international laws, national sovereignty, human rights, gender equality, other problems of the United Nations, human rights of MPs; health care of mothers and children, HIV/AIDS etc./.
